I recently shared a post on Instagram about recognizing the voice of God—you can check it out [HERE]. I was blown away by how many of you resonated with this struggle.

Honestly, I shouldn’t have been surprised. Hearing God’s voice is such a vital part of our walk with Him, yet it’s so easy for our own thoughts—and the opinions of others—to drown Him out.

That’s why I felt led to dive deeper into this topic. If you’re still struggling to hear God clearly, I want to offer more insight and encouragement.

I know how it feels to be lost and unsure. I remember crying out, “Lord, are You even speaking to me?”

The truth is, God is always speaking—but sometimes, we’re not positioned to hear Him clearly or we haven’t learned to recognize His voice.

If you’re longing for clarity, peace, and divine direction, you’re not alone. Many of us wrestle with this, and it’s actually a normal part of growing in faith. If we never had moments of seeking and wondering, we wouldn’t recognize our deep need for our heavenly father.

Let’s press in together and learn how to tune out the noise so we can hear God with confidence. Stay with me—I have something that might help. ️

10 steps to help you hear God’s voice with confidence.

1. Quiet Your Mind and Heart

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Have you ever tried to have a deep conversation in a noisy, crowded room? That’s what it’s like when we try to hear God while our minds are cluttered with distractions, stress, and busyness.

God often speaks in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-12), and we need stillness to hear Him.

Practical Step:
Set aside intentional quiet time daily—no phone, no noise—just you and God. Whether it’s in the early morning, late at night, or during a lunch break, create a sacred space for uninterrupted communion with Him. Go deeper with journaling your thoughts. There is something powerful about writing what God is saying to you. If you need a journal to help you get started, Journey of Faith Prayer and Dream Journal is pefect for this.

2. Approach God with Expectancy

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3

Do you come to God believing He wants to speak to you? Expectation sets the atmosphere for revelation.

Jesus often said, “Let it be done according to your faith” (Matthew 9:29). When we approach God, we must believe He desires to communicate with us—not just the pastors, prophets, and church leaders, but you.

Practical Step:
Before you pray, pause and remind yourself that God is a speaking God. Say, “Lord, I believe You desire to speak to me today. Help me to recognize Your voice.”

3. Spend Time in God’s Word

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105

If you’re wondering what God’s voice sounds like, start with His Word. God will never contradict scripture.

The more you immerse yourself in scripture, the more you’ll be able to discern whether a thought is from God, yourself, or external influences.

Practical Step:
Commit to reading at least one chapter of the Bible daily. Ask, “Lord, what are You speaking to me through this passage?” and write down any insights. (A great place to start is the Bible APP)

4. Journal Your Prayers and Impressions

“Write the vision and make it plain.” – Habakkuk 2:2

God speaks in many ways—through His Word, dreams, impressions, or that deep knowing in your spirit. But if we don’t write it down, we often forget.

Journaling is a powerful tool to track God’s voice, notice patterns, and see how He confirms His word over time.

Practical Step:
Each day, write out:

  1. Your prayers
  2. Any scriptures or impressions that stand out
  3. Any words, dreams, or confirmations you receive

Later, look back and see how God has been speaking consistently. Grab our Free 5 Days of Power prayers journal to get you started.

5. Pay Attention to the Holy Spirit’s Promptings

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things.” – John 14:26

Have you ever felt a gentle nudge to do something? Maybe it’s reaching out to someone, choosing a certain path, or stepping away from a situation. That’s often the Holy Spirit speaking.

God isn’t always dramatic—sometimes, He speaks in a small, persistent thought or a deep conviction.

Practical Step:
Throughout your day, pause and ask, “Holy Spirit, is there something You want me to do right now?” Pay attention to any thoughts or feelings that follow.

6. Look for Confirmation

“Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” – 2 Corinthians 13:1

God is not a God of confusion. He often confirms His messages through scripture, circumstances, wise counsel, or repeated themes.

If you keep hearing the same truth from different sources—a sermon, a friend, or even a random post—you should pay attention.

Practical Step:
Ask God for confirmation when you’re unsure. If it’s truly from Him, He will confirm it without you forcing it.

7. Remove Disobedience and Sin

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” – Psalm 66:18

Sin creates static interference in our ability to hear God. Disobedience delays direction.

If you feel distant from God, ask yourself, “Is there anything I’m ignoring or justifying that I know is wrong?”

Practical Step:
Spend time in repentance. Ask God to reveal any areas that need correction and commit to obeying Him.

8. Seek Godly Counsel

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” – Proverbs 15:22

Sometimes, we need spiritual mentors to help us discern God’s voice. We all have blind spots, and wise counsel can bring clarity.

Practical Step:
If you’re struggling with a decision, seek out a mature believer, pastor, or mentor who is rooted in the Word. Ask, “Does this align with God’s character and scripture?”

9. Be Patient and Trust His Timing

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.” – 2 Peter 3:9

Waiting on God can feel like silence, but often, He is working behind the scenes. Delayed answers don’t mean God is absent.

Practical Step:
When waiting, instead of saying, “Why isn’t God speaking?” ask, “What is God developing in me during this season?”

10. Take Action on What You’ve Already Heard

“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.” – James 1:22

Sometimes, we want new instructions when God is still waiting for us to obey the last thing He said. Obedience unlocks further direction.

Practical Step:
Ask yourself, “What was the last thing I felt God leading me to do?” If you haven’t acted on it, start there. More clarity comes as you step out in faith.
