I remember in Elementary school, during P.E., we’d have a team captain, and we’d all line up to be picked one by one. It was dreadful because you didn’t want to be last, but I almost always was. Sometimes, I’d be picked second to last, and I’d breathe a sigh of relief for that one moment. Eventually, I just started expecting to be picked last and even made peace with it. After all, I wasn’t athletic. My strengths were always in the arts and creative spaces.
But here’s the truth: I got used to being last.
And over time, it shaped how I saw myself.
I wish I could say I immediately understood that my value wasn’t in a lineup or in someone else’s opinion of me. Instead, it made me lower my expectations. It made me stop expecting too much from people, so that I wouldn’t feel the sting of rejection. I wonder how many of us have been moving through life in the same way, mistaking trauma responses and coping skills as “growth,” when really they’re just survival.
But friend, here’s the good news: God never lines us up and waits for someone else to validate us. He has already chosen us.
Ephesians 1:4 reminds us: “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.”
You are not “last” in His eyes. You’re not an afterthought, overlooked, or forgotten. You are handpicked, chosen, and loved by the One who knew you before you even took your first breath. You are chosen by God!
Maybe you’ve been carrying the weight of being “last.” Maybe you’ve adjusted your life around rejection, disappointment, or comparison. But healing begins when we stop confusing coping with wholeness. Jesus didn’t just come so we could survive; No, He came so we could have an abundant life (John 10:10). After all, God has chosen you!
Today, I encourage you to ask yourself:
- Have I been dressing up coping mechanisms as healing?
- What would it look like to step into the truth that I am chosen, wanted, and loved?

You don’t have to wait to be picked. You’ve already been chosen.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that my worth isn’t determined by where people place me but by where You’ve called me. Heal the places in me that have grown too comfortable with suppressing things. Teach me to walk in the fullness of knowing I am chosen by You, and that is what matters. Amen.
