“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”
-Marianne Williamson
One of my favorite poems is Our Deepest Fear by Marianne Williamson. When I read it the other day, I honed in on a specific verse, “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” It reminded me of a childhood song I used to sing in church,
“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.
Oh, this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.”
Today, I want to speak to you about something crucial—your light. As Christian women, we are called to shine brightly in a world that can often seem dim and dark. Yet, how often do we find ourselves allowing external factors to dull our radiance? How often do we let the opinions of others, the challenges of life, or the pressures of society dim the light that God has placed within us?
Let’s be honest; it’s easy to let these things happen. The world bombards us with messages telling us we’re not good enough, pretty enough, or successful enough. People may criticize us, doubt us, or try to tear us down. Circumstances can throw us off course, leaving us feeling defeated and discouraged.
But here’s the truth: We don’t have to let any of this diminish our light. In fact, it’s precisely during these times—when the world, people, and circumstances seem to be working against us—that our light can shine the brightest.
Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Sis, we are called to be light-bearers, illuminating the darkness with the love and truth of Christ. But we cannot fulfill this calling if we allow the world, people, or circumstances to snuff out our light.
So, how do we stop this from happening?
- First and foremost, we must root ourselves firmly in God’s Word. His truth is our anchor, providing us with strength, courage, and guidance in the face of adversity. When the world tells us lies, we combat them with the truth of Scripture.
- We must surround ourselves with fellow believers who will encourage and uplift us. We need community—a tribe of sisters who will walk alongside us, pray for us, and remind us of who we are in Christ. Join our community HERE
- Finally, we must continually remind ourselves of our identity in Christ. We are daughters of the King, chosen, loved, and redeemed. Our worth is not determined by the world’s standards but by God’s unchanging love for us.

Let us no longer allow the world, people, or circumstances to dim our light. Instead, let us shine brightly, illuminating the world with the hope, joy, and love that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
I admire individuals who are unapologetically different. Individuals who don’t allow society to force them into a box or label. There is something about someone who is unapologetically themselves that awakens and empowers us. If only more of us realized that living our truth subconsciously gives others permission to do the same, oh how we would change the world for the better. Consider this the next time you feel yourself wanting to play small.
And, then, do the world a favor and shine bright!

“Our Deepest Fear”
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
