I know the trend is usually at the New Year when we set goals and proclaim new beginnings like, “new year, new me,” but I am breaking that trend. We don’t need a new year, new month, or new week to start over. And, we also do not need a new year to pick up the pieces of where we left off either; I’m talking about broken dreams, unfinished goals, plans never realized, etc. Keep reading for tips on how to finish what you started.

I understand you may need a fresh start after last year because, for many, it was a whirlwind of the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Nevertheless, let’s embrace the new anti-new beginning thing and embrace picking up the pieces of Our RIGHT NOW!

Hear me out!

Maybe you are like me and have habitually procrastinated on things that do not have an instant reward. I know, how millennial of us.

So, this moment is the “picking up where you left off”

kind of moment.

Now isn’t the time to spill all the details—trust me! We’ve all had plans that didn’t turn out like we hoped, whether due to fear, disappointment, or just a lack of motivation. But here’s the thing: talking about it too soon can sometimes make it harder to follow through. So, for now, keep it quiet and let your actions speak for themselves.

That being said, in our walk with God, there’s something special about finishing what we start. It’s not just about reaching the end; it’s about the growth, lessons, and strength we gain along the way. As Christians, we’re called to keep pressing forward, even when it gets tough, trusting that God is guiding us and giving us what we need to finish strong.

Consider what you have left unfinished:

a weight loss goal,

an unwritten story,

a job application,

your degree,

dating,

finally quitting the job you hate,

_______________ (fill in the blank).

Let the ringing of the new year, this moment be motivation to refuse to celebrate another new year to walk into another season with that dream unfulfilled, that project left unfinished.

So, it’s time to shake off the funk, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and let go of the fear of what might or might not happen. Starting today, make a plan with realistic steps toward your goal. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve put it off—what matters is that you take action now and finish what you started. You’ve got this!

10 Faith-Filled Ways to Pick up Where You Left Off and Finish Strong

1. Start with Prayer

Before diving into any project, take a moment to pray and ask God for guidance. Invite Him into your plans and trust Him to show you the right steps. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3). You’re not doing this alone!

2. Break It Down

Big tasks can feel overwhelming, but breaking them down into small steps makes them way more doable. Focus on one small thing at a time, and you’ll be amazed at how much progress you make.

3. Set Faith-Filled Deadlines

Set realistic deadlines for your goals and pray over them. Trust that God will help you stay on track. Plus, having a timeline keeps you focused and gives you something to aim for.

4. Find Accountability

Tell someone about your goals—whether it’s a friend, your Bible study group, or a mentor. Having others check in on your progress will help keep you motivated and moving forward.

5. Focus on One Thing at a Time

Whew! This is a struggle area for me! It’s tempting to juggle everything at once, but that just leads to burnout. Focus on finishing one task before moving to the next. Ask God for focus and direction when distractions pop up.

6. Track Your Progress in a Journal

If you’ve followed me for some time, you knew this one was coming. Ha! If you’d rather use a journal with prompts, scriptures and goal setting list already mapped out for you, be sure to grab The Journey Of Faith: Prayer and Dream Journal HERE. Keeping a journal can be super helpful. Write down your progress, any prayers you’ve prayed, and moments where you’ve seen God move. Looking back will remind you how far you’ve come and motivate you to keep going!

7. Use Scripture for Motivation

When you’re feeling stuck, turn to the Bible for motivation. Verses like “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) are great reminders that you can do this with God’s help. Here are two more scriptures to meditate on… (Philippians 1:6) “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (James 2:17) “Faith without works is dead”

8. Rest, Don’t Quit

It’s okay to rest when you’re tired, but don’t quit altogether. In fact, you should incorporate rest even before you get tired. This will help with burnout. Use those times of rest to recharge and spend time with God, asking for renewed energy to keep going. Check out this post, Embracing REST: Rediscovering Blessings in Stillness for some encouragement in this area.

9. Adjust As You Go

It’s okay to adjust your plans! Life changes, and sometimes our goals need to shift too. Keep checking in with God to make sure you’re on the right track and be open to His direction.

10. Celebrate the Small Wins

Celebrate the little victories along the way! Every step forward is worth celebrating. Thank God for the progress you’ve made, and use that as fuel to keep going.

Finishing what you start isn’t always easy, but it’s so worth it. As you stay committed to your goals—whether it’s in your spiritual life, relationships, or personal growth—remember that God is with you every step of the way. Lean on prayer, reflect on your journey through journaling, and stay encouraged by His Word. You’ve got this, and with God’s help, you can see it through to the end! Keep trusting, keep praying, and keep going—you’re closer than you think.
